Wong Chun Seng Preschool Pupils Learn Through Play: Cultivating Awareness of Eye Care

To enhance the young learners’ understanding of eye health and vision care, the Wong Chun Seng Memorial Preschool held a health education activity titled “The Eye: A Fun Adventure” on September 9 and 30, 2026. Parents of students in the Montessori and kindergarten classes were also invited to accompany their children, making the event an enjoyable parent-child learning experience focused on health education.

Ophthalmologist Dr. Jamil Laurence So Reyes introduced the basic structure and functions of the eyes to the young children in a clear, accessible way. Through lively explanations and real-life examples, he guided the children to recognize the importance of the eyes in daily life and learning, as well as how to properly care for them.
The distinguished doctor also explained common refractive errors, including myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism, and further discussed presbyopia (age-related farsightedness) in the simplest terms possible, to help both children and parents understand the vision problems that people of different ages may face and the importance of regular eye examinations.
Addressing questions that young children might have, Dr. So Reyes also specifically explained how vision tests are conducted for young children. Even when children are not yet able to read letters, ophthalmologists can still perform vision checks using pictures, shapes, symbols, and specialized children’s eye charts. This explanation not only satisfied the children’s curiosity but also helped parents better understand the basic methods of vision screening for young children.
The activity also included engaging hands-on segments, where students received materials to make two simple viewing tubes and attached designated pictures to them. Under the guidance of their teachers and the doctor, the children first looked at the pictures through each tube separately and then observed with both eyes at the same time.
This simple yet interesting activity enabled the students to personally experience how the two eyes work together and how the brain integrates the images received by both eyes into a complete visual picture. This playful learning experience transformed an otherwise abstract concept of vision into something the children could easily understand.
Before the activity ended, Dr. So Reyes presented each student with a small magnifying glass as a souvenir, encouraging the children to maintain their curiosity and continue exploring the wonders of the eyes and the amazing world around them.
“The Eye: A Fun Adventure” was not only an educational activity about eye health but also a learning journey that combined knowledge, exploration, hands-on practice, and parent-child interaction.
